The X5’s pre-crash front seatbelts will tighten automatically in the event the vehicle detects an impending crash, improving protection against injury significantly. The Discovery doesn’t offer pre-crash pretensioners.

The BMW X5 has standard driver and front passenger side knee airbags mounted low on the dashboard. These airbags help prevent the driver and front passenger from sliding under their seatbelts or the main frontal airbags; this keeps them better positioned during a collision for maximum protection. Knee airbags also help keep the legs from striking the dashboard, preventing knee and leg injuries in the case of a serious frontal collision. The Discovery doesn’t offer knee airbags.

There are over 72 percent more BMW dealers than there are Land Rover dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the X5’s warranty.

The X5’s 3.0 turbo 6-cylinder hybrid produces 98 more horsepower (394 vs. 296) and 133 lbs.-ft. more torque (428 vs. 295) than the Discovery’s standard 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder. The X5’s 3.0 turbo 6-cylinder hybrid produces 39 more horsepower (394 vs. 355) and 59 lbs.-ft. more torque (428 vs. 369) than the Discovery Gemini/Tempest’s optional 3.0 turbo/supercharged 6-cylinder hybrid.

Regenerative brakes improve the X5’s fuel efficiency by converting inertia back into energy instead of wasting it. The Discovery doesn’t offer a regenerative braking system.

The X5’s launch control uses engine electronics to hold engine RPM’s precisely in order to provide the most stable and rapid acceleration possible, using all of the available traction. The Discovery doesn’t offer launch control.

For better traction and acceleration, the X5 has larger rear tires than the Discovery (284/45R21 vs. 255/55R20).

Manual rear side window sunshades are available in the X5 to help block heat and glare for the rear passengers. The Discovery doesn’t offer rear side window sunshades.

Both the BMW X5 and the Land Rover Discovery have a standard Qi wireless phone charging system in the front seat. To easily keep personal devices charged in the rear seat, without cables tangling and wearing out, the X5 also has a standard wireless charging system in the rear seat. The Discovery does not.
